Oh googlepants. (Why didn’t I think of that yet?) I love you. I miss you. I can’t live without you. That’s why I’m back (as if from outer space).
As Ben mentioned, I moved up-country — to scenic Yonkers, New York — so my internet connection has been unpredictable at best for the last week or three. Alas, I’m still unpacking my life at the moment (and watching TV on DVD with my goodfornothing roommates), but thx to my friend Pete, I did have a chance to catch these guys down in the Newest of Yorks (the city proper, that is). Olympia, Washington’s Fierce Perm, in all their totally ridic glory, played at The Delancey on 8–21, and it was an extremely fun show. They were preceded by two almost-equally-as-fun bands, the Love Loves (whose sheer wonderful n’sync sloppiness charmed the pants offa me) and Marla Hooch (named after the Rosie O’Donnell character in A League of their Own, which is like holy moly one of my favorites)… but once FP got onstage, it was rock n’ roll city. I tried to close my eyes like it was a dream or something, but everytime I opened them, the completely unapologetic kitsch-crunch of the band that was already taking over my ears pretty much took over my eyes too.

These cats are no-bullshit rock and roll. And their frontwoman is pure blitzkrieg. And her voice is effortless rock goddess. She doesn’t have to scream, but damned if she don’t. If Fierce Perm come around your neck of the woods, please go ahead and see them. You’ll be enriched.
“Liza Minelli”, for instance, begins innocently enough. There’re vocals, then there’re guitars, and then — a third into the song — there’s screaming! And shredding! But then, as a pop song ought to, this tune takes control of itself. Because Fierce Perm are gritty but poppy, and that’s what makes them so darn good live. Don’t you see? It’s all connected. But don’t worry. “Liza Minelli” ends with a scream, just like you want it to do.
So yeah.
I’ll return, like leggings or long shorts, I’ll return from some kind of bizarre reject clothing hell. I’ll be back, gpants. Just watch. JUST LISTEN TO THIS SONG LIKE I TOLD YOU TO and just watch.
